Muku Releases The Structure Theme, A Free Minimalist WordPress Theme
Muku is proud to announce the release of a set of free premium minimalistic WordPress themes, the Structure Theme. The theme is based on a clean, modern and minimalist aesthetic that lends itself well to customization. If you would like to have the Structure Theme installed or personalized to match your brand, we encourage you to contact us.
Why free? Well, it recently came to my attention that Muku has been getting the wrong kind of web exposure. It’s great exposure, but not the kind that pays the bills. In addition, we have been working together with our partners on some very exciting personal projects for the greater portion of 2009. However, as a result, we have very little to show for months of dedicated work until those projects are launched. The Structure Theme is our teaser of the exciting things to come. We hope the theme will generate the kind of exposure we are looking for within the community, and in the meantime people will seek our design services and customization requests for the Structure Theme.
There seems to be a lack of quality minimalist WordPress themes. As most great designers know, less is often more. I’ve searched on numerous occasions for a great theme to use as a starting point for personal websites. Unfortunately, I never found anything I was satisfied with. Most free themes are mediocre at best. Fortunately, we decided to fill that gap with the Structure Theme. If the theme gains a strong enough response, you can expect more quality minimalist themes in the future!
We have high hopes and lofty goals for 2010, and we’re looking forward to meeting them. The Structure Theme is our first step in that direction. Thanks for any support or feedback regarding the theme!

k cool, can we get on to the real stuff now? what happened to Organic Themes that was suppose to open by the end of last year like you said? This wordpress theme you made is too basic, anyone can do it.
I wouldn’t say anyone can do it. Regardless, we actually did it
As for Organic Themes, that’s still our main focus, but the holidays were a slight set back. We don’t want to open the doors until it’s perfected. But it is about 95% done and will be launched soon!
I’m stoked you’re excited about Organic Themes! I assure you we will be promoting it like crazy once it launches.
Hey David, sorry about my last comment, I was just in a bad mood. But I am glad you updated me with what’s going on with Organic Themes. I’m just so anxious, can’t wait for it man! I’ll just be patient, definitely want it perfect
I just checked out the Structure Theme, I should have checked it out first before I said anything. Really great stuff!
Haha, no worries. Any feedback is welcome. I’m glad you checked it out and liked it though.
I know what you mean, I’m anxious for Organic Themes too!
hi david,
i’m in love with your structure theme. it is just what i’m looking for with my new plog (photobolg). but each time i try to upload the file to wordpress, i’m taken to an error page asking me if that’s really my intended action (uploading the zip file). the link takes me back to the wordpress page to upload a new theme by zip file. any assistance with trouble shooting this problem would be great. thanks david, for your awesome work. btw, i’m a molokai boy! shaka braddah. : )
Hey Jake!
I’m glad you dig the theme! Awesome to hear you’re from Molokai too!
I think it’s because there are 4 themes included in the downloaded zip file, and the WordPress theme uploader won’t accept a zip file with multiple themes. If you unzip the original file, and then zip the individual theme folders and upload them individually… it should work. Otherwise, I would suggest uploading them the old fashioned way to your ../wp-content/themes/ directory. You’ll need an FTP program such as Transmit for Mac or FileZilla for PC. FileZilla is free, and the trial version of Transmit should do the trick. I hope that helps braddah!
hey david,
Just uploaded the Structure Theme – love it! It’s my very first go at building a personal website and your theme is just what I wanted. Thanks!
Question though: how do I remove the Structure Theme image at the top?
Any help would be great!
Hey Sai,
No problem, I’m glad you’re digging the theme. We’re actually going to be releasing a supported and perfected version of the Structure Theme on Organic Themes next week. It will have a lot of new features and options… including a simple upload option to replace the existing logo.
For the free version, you will need to replace the logo.png file within the images folder of the theme. This must be done through the use of an FTP program such as Filezilla or Transmit. Thanks!
David
Thanks David! I’ll give that a try. One more question though: what font did you use for the logo? I’d like to use that font to create the replacement logo.
Thanks again,
Saira
Hi,
I love the theme as well as your example of what can be done with it here http://organicthemes.com/demo/structure/#blank I have one problem though. When you say to use the custom field “feature” for the main default featured image. Do you mean, create a new custom field and name it “featured” and give it the value”featured” If so, I did and all I get is a blank gray box with a question mark icon in a little blue square. Thanks in avance for any help
Hi Marco!
Thanks! You got it half right
The name should be “featured” and the value should be a link to the image (e.g. http://yourdomain.com/img.jpg). You can also check out our perfected version of the Structure Theme on Organic Themes, which uses the Post Thumbnail function instead of custom fields to manage thumbnails. The demo can be found here, http://organicthemes.com/demo/structure/.
WOW! Thanks for the incredible response time! I went ahead and purchased it. I can tell that it will save me a lot of time. Is there documentation to go along with it. To make the slider work and to explaining the functionality? Thanks again!
